coming soon // Wolf Parade : “Expo 86”

“Expo 86 was a World’s Fair that happened in Vancouver in 1986. It’s been this thing we all talked about as a band. We all grew up in British Columbia, and we were all at Expo, which lasted about three or four days. It’s a weird little thought experiment– basically, we were all young children […]

favorite albums of the decade.

Terrorism, war, recession . . . whatever.  This was a terrific decade for music.  These were the albums that gripped me and never let go and remain head-and-shoulders above the rest.

I don’t feel complete unless I’ve compiled a list ranking my favorite music of the year (too many NYEs spent up late listening to the top 100 countdown on the headphones.)  So, here goes: favorite 30 albums top 5 albums favorite 20 songs favorite 10 videos

Spencer Krug strikes again

Spencer Krug‘s latest musical effort—Moonface—will be releasing an EP early next year.  In the meantime, he’s made it available for whatever donation you feel it’s worth (including $0) as a digital flac file.  I don’t exaggerate when I say it’s priceless music, but I did donate a nominal sum to his artistic cause.  The marimba-soaked […]

I’ve become a Spencer Krug superfan, which isn’t news to anyone who knows me well.  Late in 2008, we had a new Wolf Parade album, which was fantastic.  Earlier this year, we had a new Swan Lake album, which was superb.  Now, in a couple weeks, we’ll have a new Sunset Rubdown album which carries […]

from the headphones: swan lake "enemy mine"

swan lake enemy mine genre death folk glam metal sounds like angels riding a thunderstorm. peaceful venom. splatter painting the cosmos. seasick wormholes.  wounded soldiers in an alternate history montmartre.  a drunken barn-raising. birds of paradise fluttering within a rambling glass conservatory. notes song title warlock psychiatrist most aptly describes the album. verdict just short […]
